Flipping Change for our neighbors

Phoenicia Diner is putting the spotlight on organizations in our community that do the essential work of helping to feed, protect, entertain, and support our residents and visitors. This summer we're introducing The Community Stack -- flipping change for our neighbors. Each month we will be featuring and raising funds for a neighborhood organization. Guests can join the effort by rounding up their change or tossing it in the jar.

Shandaken Parks & Recreation

The Town of Shandaken is home to six public parks, spanning Glenbrook Park & Dog Park, Big Indian Park, Parish Field/Phoenicia Park, Rock Cut Preserve, Smith Park & Shandaken Skate Park, and Simpson Mini-Park. Run entirely by an all-volunteer parks committee, the team spends the year applying for grants, repairing/replacing aging equipment, and maintaining the grounds for residents and visitors alike. Recent projects include a new skate park at Smith Park, a playground opening soon at Glenbrook, and a free mini-golf course and nature play area at Parish Field. The parks also host community gatherings throughout the year, including the Phoenicia Farmer's Market, the Shandaken Concert Series and the Balkan Music Festival.

The Phoenicia Food Pantry

Founded in the 1980s, The Phoenicia Food Pantry at the United Methodist Church is Shandaken's local resource for those experiencing food insecurity.  Run entirely on volunteer power, local donors, and regional grants, the pantry services up to 50 households per week and is growing. Families, seniors, and individuals are welcome to shop with dignity to find fresh produce, frozen meats, sourdough breads, canned foods, pantry staples, cleaning supplies, body care items, and pet food. The Pantry's guiding principle is based on the premise that people need to eat 365 days a year.

The Pantry is open at 29 Church Street on Thursdays between 10am–12pm, and by appointment. No one is refused service. 

Phoenicia Fire District

Phoenicia Fire District is a group of three fire rescue companies serving the community of Shandaken, in Ulster County, New York.  M.F. Whitney Hose Co., Shandaken/Allaben Hose Co. and Onteora Hose Co. Their diverse team of volunteer firefighters train relentlessly and strive to provide the highest level of fire suppression, incident response, vehicle extrication and rescue operations. They are neighbors of all ages with families, jobs, school, and active lifestyles who still find time to give back to our community.
